Aqua Lauta Pump @ McMaster Waterweek

The Aqua Lauta Pump was on display and in use as part of McMaster's Waterweek event yesterday. Working tag team with John from Hamilton Water, participants that pledged to enjoy tap water over bottled water received a new refillable water bottle. New bottle in hand, or bringing one they already had, participants then came over to pedal the pump and think about the energy needed to move water to all the places we expect it to be.

I made some modifications to the pump allowing for friends to pump and draw the water simultaneously. A new option also allowed participants to pedal and fill a communal water refilling dispenser.

my wonderful volunteer Riva helps work the taps

Eva enjoys filling her bottle from the communal refilling station.

Poverty: A Field Test

I'll Buy Your Poverty: Field test - Vancouver

As part of my time at Emily Carr this past summer I ran a field test looking to explore and document the publics interest/interaction with a sign posted in various locations around Grandville Island. There were two things I was specifically looking at:

1- would people remove the tags from my sign and email in.
2- did the location of the sign (that being more in a public space rather than with EC space) effect how many stopped to remove the tags.

Here is a composite of the sign in various locations and times.

The wording on the poster was designed to question & challenge the notion of poverty. In a city like Vancouver, with its large gap between have's and have not's, does the idea of 'owning' poverty apply? Inspired by Renzo Martin's Episode III, Enjoy Poverty film and the questions it raises.

The Thinking Garden

As part of my artist in residency at the Art Gallery of Mississauga, The Thinking Garden has been created as a collaborative project involving all the students from Fairview Public School. Please have a look at www.christophermcleod.ca/p/the-thinking-garden.html documenting the project with two short videos at the bottom of the link explaining the project and its features.

I want to say it was a privilege to work with the Gallery as well as the staff and students from Fairview. They should all be very proud of the work they did. The installation came together wonderfully and I hope the students and teachers get a great many years out of it.

Station Two: Details

Here are a few detail pics of Station Two. I have started wet testing and things are going well. The new seals on the gravity filter work and the centrifuge looks and works great. I will posting a couple short videos of me walking through the first time I added water to the unit.

For now - some detail pics:

The Aqua Lauta Project: Station Two

Station Two is a hand cranked - centrifugal and gravity sand - UV -  semi-portable - water filtration station. Station One can be used to pump water into Station Two when not using the included brass vessel to fill the unit with water.

Here are images of the progress: The base frame and copper plated filter risers are in place. Two stabilizer arms open from the front where the crank will be mounted. The centrifuge can be seen at the top flowing down into the gravity filters. The UV is not attached, but the black part above the centrifuge houses the gearing for it.
